Sense of Wonder Camp will be On-line this Year!

Dear Members of the Sense of Wonder Camp community,

We are reaching out to you in this time of unprecedented uncertainty, hoping that you and all of your loved ones are safe and well.

Full Circle Susquehanna, Inc. held a board meeting last evening utilizing Zoom.  We are suddenly finding ourselves feeling grateful for social media technologies in a new way, and we suspect that many of you are, too.

Because we have no clear idea how long our community will need to practice social distancing, we have decided that we will not have an in-person Sense of Wonder Camp this year.  We will miss being with the girls but we think this is the best way to proceed.

Instead of a one-week camp, we are going to find ways to offer the kinds of experiences that we incorporate into camp each year.  We will do this through a special web site which we are in the process of developing right now.  Some of the pages will even be interactive!    We plan to add suggestions and activities regularly, starting fairly soon, and will post here again with a link to the web site as soon as we upload it.  We will also have links to other nature-based eco-feminist resources.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

Stay safe, stay home as much as possible, and be well.  And wash your hands!

May you be showered with Green blessings,

Sarah, Michele, Kara, Amy & Kelsey

Sense of Wonder Camp

For the past twenty years, Full Circle Susquehanna, Inc. has held Sense of Wonder camp for girls during the week that includes the Summer Solstice.  We have had the pleasure, delight and honor to come to know hundreds of wonderful girls, and to introduce them to strong women, teach them basic naturalist skills, walk through woods and streams with them, and watch them grow up into strong women themselves.  We love Sense of Wonder Camp.

We are writing this letter to let you know that after 20 years, Sense of Wonder is going to take a sabbatical this year.  As a board of directors, we will be putting our efforts into brainstorming, and visioning for the future.  We take seriously our commitment to the girls who attend camp, to the women and men who have attended events we presented and who visit our feminist free lending library, and to our larger community.

We know that there will be some sad girls receiving this news, and as sad as we are to disappoint them this year, we are very excited about what the future may hold.  May we all come to Sense of Wonder Camp June 20-24, 2016 with new enthusiasm and a fresh and strong vision to inspire us.  Save those dates!

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments you may have.

In gratitude for your support of our work.

Sense of Wonder Camp 2014

We are excited about this year's camp.  We actually have homework or moon-work for the girls before camp begins.  We have asked that they follow the moon or keep a moon journal now until camp begins on Monday, June 23rd.  We will talk about the moon cycles and patterns that they observed. The National Wildlife Foundation will be our guide for this activity. http://www.nwf.org/kids/family-fun/outdoor-activities/moon-journal.aspx

Yesterday, we walked the some trails at Millport Conservancy.  What a beautiful space.  Violets, geese, other wild flowers and mating ducks.  Peaceful and contemplative.  It will be interesting to see how camp ebbs and flows this year in a new place.

We are looking for several books for our library collection...

There are a few books we would really like to add to our lending library collection.  If you have any of these, and are finished reading them, perhaps you'd consider donating them?  Or, maybe you'd like to sponsor the purchase of one of them?  Let us know - we'd be ever so grateful!

1. Always Rachel: the letters of Rachel Carson and Dorothy Freeman, 1952-1964, an intimate portrait of a remarkable friendship (edited by Martha Freeman [Dorothy's granddaughter and published by Beacon Press)

2. The Dance of Anger by Harriet Lerner

3. This Time I Dance!: Creating the Work You Love by Tama Kieves

4. Creating the Work You Love: Courage, Commitment, and Career by Rick Jarow

Sense of Wonder Camp - June 23 to 27, 2014

We have the brochures for Sense of Wonder camp & can send them by email. Let us know if you would like to receive one!  Please email fullcirclesusq@yahoo.com

Camp will be held June 23-27 this year, a week later than we usually hold it because of the snow days this winter - several local school districts are extending their last day of school. We also have a new home for camp - the beautiful Millport Conservancy! We are very excited!

It IS Sense Of WONDER Camp!

On the Eve of Summer Solstice, we rise for our fourth day; representing the element EARTH and the direction NORTH.

From Starhawk's Spiral Dance, "The North is considered the most powerful direction.  Because the sun never reaches the norther hemisphere, it is the direction of Mystery, of the unseen.  The North Star is the center, around which the skies revolve.  Altars face North in the Craft.  North corresponds to Earth, to the body, to midnight, winter, brown, black, and the green of vegetation.  From the North comes the power to keep silent, to listen as well as speak, to keep secrets, to know what not to say."

Here are some of the gifts from Mother Nature and the creations the girls made from Air/East (dream catchers) and  Fire/South (Shakers) as well as some visitors that called us to listen with our deer ears, see with our owl eyes, touch with our racoon hands and smell with our dog noses.

Seeking Donations of Specific Books

We are able to accept donations of books, which are in keeping with the stated mission of Full Circle Susquehanna. Some books on our current Wish List are:

All About Love - bell hooks
Sister Outsider - Audre Lourde
The Heretic's Heart by Margot Adler
Eastern Body Western Mind by Anodea Judith
Introduction to Permaculture by Bill Mollison

We do not have much from May Sarton or Adrienne Rich, either.  Full Circle Susquehanna, Inc. is currently accepting these types of eco-feminist books at the Radiance Studio, 9 W. Grant St., Lancaster, PA 17603 (located across Central Market).

Second Annual Yard Sale - Saturday, April 27, 2013

Full Circle Susquehanna is having a yard sale/fundraiser on Saturday, April 27.

Some items for the sale are kitchen items, a water fountain and potted, native plants (Native columbine, ferns, jack in the pulpits, and perhaps some trillium and queen of the night tulips) and who knows what else. If you need to do some spring cleaning and would like to donate your gently used items, please email fullcirclesusq@yahoo.com and note "yard sale" in subject line.  Yes, we will take clothing, hesitantly, as I only have one clothing rack to display the items.  If you can price your items, too, that would greatly assist us with set up as we already have many people donating their stuff.

Please spread the word to help us re-purpose these items to a good home and for a great cause.  Mark your calendar so you don't miss the yard sale @ 843 Janet Avenue, Lancaster, PA.
